With global warming now on the global political stage; with ground, air and water pollution devastating regions and cities; and with food safety on many people’s minds, environmental journalism is becoming more and more important.

And sensors will be crucial tools for environmental journalists and activists.

Sensors collect data –on water quality, air quality, temperatures, noise levels, and more- where data doesn’t exist.  Sensors help tell important stories that would otherwise go unreported; sensor journalism gives families information to stay healthy and hold wrongdoers accountable.

John Keefe is a pioneer in sensor reporting. His latest sensor project involved building water monitors for the Monongahela River in West Virginia to text their water quality readings live.

John believes that journalists shouldn’t fear technology and that everyone can find his or her inner geek.
